Tight oil production began with the Lower Amaranth in 1980, and there

On April 30, 2013, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) released an updated oil and gas resource assessment for Properties and Production · Williston Basin Overview

The Williston Basin spans portions of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana and the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. While the presence of oil in the basin has been known since the first discovery in the 1920s, exploration and development activity was sporadic, and declining until a revolutionary innovation in technology during the early 2000s.

Crude oil production values are based on estimates. Crude oil production from the Williston Basin (primarily the Bakken formation) recently increased to more than 600 thousand barrels per day (bbl/d), according to Bentek Energy, LLC (Bentek), testing the ability of the transportation system—oil pipelines, truck deliveries, and rail—to move crude oil out of the area (see chart above). Using a geology-based assessment methodology, the U.S. Geological Survey estimated undiscovered, technically recoverable mean resources of 884 million barrels of oil and 106 billion cubic feet of gas in the North-Central Montana and Williston Basin Provinces of central Montana and western North Dakota. For this article, oil well production was simulated for all oil wells located in the Williston basin. The simulation was allowed to run for future months in order to effectively forecast future

The Dawson Bay Formation has produced oil in three North Dakota fields (Fig. 18). At Dolphin and Temple fields, both significant oil fields, porous carbonates pinch out updip on a structural nose (Dean, 1982; Heck, 1987). At Marmon Field, the trap is essentially the same as at Dolphin and Temple fields, The Bakken shale is one of several oil-bearing rock formations within the greater Williston Basin, which spans about 200,000 square miles covering parts of North Dakota, Montana, and Canada: Image source: EIA.

Brine (also referred to as ‘produced water’) samples were collected from 28 wells producing oil from the Late Devonian-Early Mississippian Bakken and Three Forks Formations in the Williston Basin of eastern Montana and western North Dakota. The samples were analyzed for major ions, trace metals, stable isotopes, and strontium isotopes. Related products. As oil and gas moved into the anticlines, they flowed upward, closer to the earth’s surface. Anticlines trap oil in spaces that can be tapped by drilling from the surface. The Nesson anticline is the most important of these formations in North Dakota. It is located in the Williston Basin a few miles east of Williston. Hess Corp. has produced a record-breaking 24-hour test well this month in McKenzie County, N.D., surpassing all records for U.S. land wells, according to an article in the website of the Oil Patch Hotline, an oil and gas trade publication for the Williston Basin.
